Joaquín Amenábar learned bandoneón tuning, restoring and bellows construction with Jorge Wekkesser, “El Alemán de Barracas” who inmigrated in Argentina in 1930 from Hamburg, Germany. He worked in his attelier during the last five years of Wekkeser’s life tuning and repairing bandoneons with him.

  • He was invited to share experience and information about bandoneón tuning by the Institut für Musikinstrumentenbau of Zwota, Klingenthal, Germany in January 2001 for the project of rebuilding the Arnold Bandoneón in Carlsfeld, Germany where the old factory of Alfred Arnold was placed.
  • He has given master classes in different universities and forums about the instrument, its evolution starting from the concertina, the placing of the notes in the keyboard, methods of learning the instrument, as well as classes for composers and arrangers on writing for bandoneón.
