In 2000 Joaquín Amenábar created his tango orchestra “Orquesta Típica de la Guardia Vieja”, a traditional tango orchestra with 4 bandoneons, 4 violins, piano and double bass, from which the bandoneon players were Joaquín’s bandoneon students of the Buenos Aires Conservatory of music, with the rest of the musicians being professional players.
- The project’s goal was to give the bandoneon students the possibility to play in the style of the 30s and 40s as part of a tango orchestra. But, the project evolved more than expected and the orchestra played in the most important scenarios in Buenos Aires, including theaters, dance venues, Centro Cultural San Martín, and the Market Palace concert hall.
- The first contest of “Bares Notables de Buenos Aires” – maybe the most important tango contests for tango artists in Buenos Aires – was won by the orchestra in the Category “Orchestras”. The “Orquesta Típica de la Guardia Vieja” played between 2000 and 2007.
